School daze

Forgive my less than stellar blogging schedule lately. Even though the boys started school this week, I’m busier than ever getting caught up on appointments and errands, school supply shopping (my personal 7th level of Hell), and getting ready for company this weekend.

I’m also in school myself, taking a class on pacing by the wonderful Mary Buckham. I’m certain I’ll have some general thoughts to share before it’s over. There are probably 75 people in the class which means many emails to wade through. I know I’d learn a lot from reading Mary’s comments on everyone else’s homework—a unique feature you often won’t get in a traditional classroom—but I just can’t commit that much time to it.

I did get some writing done on the new book this week, but most of my “working” time has been spent on GMC, story structure, and general brainstorming. Today I spent two hours on my back deck enjoying the fabulous weather and writing a scene that will most likely end up in the Unused Scenes folder in my Scrivener file. 😉

Graduation to 1st Brown (The second brown belt, just to be confusing. Like 1st Lieutenant...), March 2009

In addition to all that, my husband and I are going back to school. For martial arts this time. We spent our last two years of our previous tour in Virginia working on Tae Kwon Do, and were eager to get back into something similar. This time, however, we decided to go with Kung Fu. It’s what we originally wanted to try before we were talked into TKD, and the Master that taught it at our old school just opened a new center of his own. As usual, everything lined up perfectly.

We started Monday, and it was great to be back. Martial arts combine the best of yoga’s soothing meditative moves with the heart-pumping work out of punches, kicks, and sparring. I didn’t realize how much I missed that until we were in class.

As far as I’m concerned, you’re never too old to learn something new. In fact, if I stop learning, then what’s the point of life?

How about you? Got anything new on your plate?

Tell your friends!

Gwen, that’s AWESOME about the martial arts. I’m actually in the process of drafting up my cirriculum to start teaching at one of the local non-profits for at-risk youth. I love knowing there are other writers out there who enjoy yoga and the heart pumping workouts from a MA class.

You’ll have to let me do an interview for the DC Examiner on your journey back 🙂

I’m excited. Your class sounds like a really great thing. I think giving kids an outlet for their energy, and a way to calm themselves is really valuable. And maybe a few defense moves too… 😉

You’re writing for the Examiner? Feel free to email me offline. Have a great night!

I’m in my first week back at school myself so I’m dead tired and dragging myself to the computer to get my 100 words per day minimum in.

The Kung Fu sounds exciting. Good luck with the new book, Gwen.

Good for you on finding the right MA school. Today is the first Friday I don’t teach a morning kid’s karate class because they are back at school. Just the adult class.

Good luck with the new manuscript. I’m starting a new one too, I’ll have to go back and read through all you Scrivener posts. I’m thinking about trying it for this one.

Thanks, Kathy. I’ll bet the adults only class is a nice break.

Good luck with your new MS too. I highly recommend starting it in Scrivener from the beginning. I think if you give it a try you’ll never want to go back to writing in a word processor. I know I didn’t. And if you have any questions, just let me know.
