This a-muses me

Do you ever feel like your muse has abandoned you? Well, maybe that's because you don't have one. Honestly, I believe that my muse is within. It's my subconscious, the universe, the superconscious…whatever.

But just out of curiosity, I looked up the muses. I must have slept through this part of my mythology class, but apparently there were nine. Nine?

Really. And it seems to me that a few of them are a bit redundant.

According to infoplease.com, the following are the nine muses who were goddesses born of Zeus (you know, the head guy) and Mnemosyne (hmm, need a mnemonic for that?).

Calliope was the muse of epic poetry. (Not just any poetry, epic poetry.)

Clio was the muse of history. (This must be how we get those textbooks with creative retellings of history. I think she's been hanging out in Texas lately.)

Erato was the muse of love poetry. (I guess she's as close as I'm going to get to having a muse.)

Euterpe was the muse of music. (Five poetry muses and only one for music? Though most of them sang or played an instrument, so I'm confused.)

Melpomene was the muse of tragedy. (How sad.)

Polyhymnia was the muse of sacred poetry. (Not gonna touch this one.)

Terpsichore was the muse of dance. (A few of the contestants on SYTYCD could use some help from ol' Terpy.)

Thalia was the muse of comedy. (No kidding.)

Urania was the muse of astronomy. (Never would have guessed.)

So apparently the arts back in the day were all music, storytelling, and dance. If you're a painter or sculptor, you're SOL. There's no muse for that. Sorry.

In the end, no matter what we're working on, we can't wait for the muse to whisper in our ear, or provide us with a vision. We make it happen. So, sit down and get started. The rest will fall into place.

And, hey, if a muse does visit you, I'd love to hear about it. If nothing else, it will make a great story.

I have them all listed in Muse – the ebook and guided meditation series I created after teaching at least year’s RWA. Trust me, I was just as astounded.

Mine likes to visit when I’m driving at night by myself. No, I have no idea why…perhaps it’s the dark and the quiet.

Great work here. I didn’t know half of these. Quite neat.

My muse visits me while driving too. Mostly whenever I’m driving, day of night.

    Thanks for this…

I think muses are what you make of them. Mine are little sprites that dance around in the background agitating my characters, prodding them into talking to me.

Every now and then, they poke me awake at two a.m. though to jot down a story idea or two. *yawn* Like last night. lol.

This is a great post, Gwen. I love your sense of humor!! 😀

I agree, Martha. Muses are whatever you make of them. I love your vision of dancing sprites. And I often get ideas when I should be sleeping too. Thanks!

My muse is an intrusive shower visitor. I also find my muse first thing in the morning. I don’t rely on her to write my pages. She is woefully lazy and only my editor side forces me to get the words down. Once I get rolling, I’m able to write with or without her (she’s usually at a party or winery).

Well, just brainstormed more story ideas and GMC–prepare yourself for Story Sketch number 3.

    😉

🙂 Christine. I was just about to post that I think my muse was fathered by Poseidon instead of Zeus. Running water – especially in the shower – never fails to inspire me. I’ve been missing a crucial bit of conflict in my story but for the life of me I couldn’t figure it out.

It’s a miserable rainy day here and I had a headache so I decided to hop in the shower. Lo and behold, my shower muse handed over all the plot and motivation problems neatly resolved. I <3 her.

Mary, it’s nice that you can tap into your creativity so easily. Jogging is my best way to solve plot problems, but I can’t just go out for a jog every time I get stuck. Although, I’m sure my waistline would thank me.

Yay for the shower muse. 😉

Leave it to a Californian to talk about rewriting history…… Not only do they rewrite history in CA, but also current events… Are you SURE you didn’t go to Berkeley?? At least then I could blame it on the drugs!!! lol, just kidding…..

Mumbles to himself, Gads I HATE California…….

LOL, Tony. You tryin’ to pick a fight? 😉

I’m technically an Arizonan, but I’m not sure I want to claim that State right now either. I have a love/hate relationship with CA, but so far I haven’t found the perfect place to live. We’re excited to be going back to Northern Virginia, but it has its own problems.

Anyway, thanks for checking in, even if you do hate CA…

LOL, in Northern Virginia right now, Alexandria, and is so looking forward to leaving in a couple weeks!!! I travel a lot for business and have been just about everywhere. BTW, think I remember you saying something about Alabama. If so, get over to Anniston and try the Cajun pot at Damn Yankees before you leave. He serves other varieties of pots too. The Cajun Pot is a seafood and pasta pot like a Cioppino but better!! and it is so good. The White Villa Restaurant in Sylacauga, AL is awesome too!!!

I haven’t found the perfect place yet either. A winning lottery ticket would go a long way toward fixing that!!

Alexandria is BUSY! That’s a little too urban for me. I’m a suburban girl myself. We are in the Montgomery area right now, but only until mid-June. If we get a chance, I’ll check those places out. Thanks for the suggestions.

And, yeah. A winning lottery ticket would mean I could change homes with the seasons and shift between mountains and the beach at will. That would be paradise.
